Georgia basketball has played high-level opponents all season, starting in the Bahamas against St. John’s and Marquette, and against a gauntlet-of-an-SEC schedule in a conference that sent 14 teams to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs will play their 15^th ranked opponent Thursday afternoon when they face No. 23 Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia (20-12) is the No. 9 seed in the Midwest Region. Gonzaga (25-8) is the No. 8 seed.

“We’re going to be a tough out,” Georgia coach Mike White said. “I think the committee recognized that.”

The Bulldogs have wins over a No. 1 seed in Florida and a No. 2 seed in St. John’s.

Gonzaga reached the national championship game in 2017 and 2021 and is seeking to advance to the Sweet 16 for the tenth straight year. Georgia, meanwhile, is playing in its first NCAA Tournament game since 2015.

"It's a dream I've always had as a little kid," sophomore guard Silas Demary Jr. said Wednesday. "To be able to live it out and showcase my skills at this stage, I just can't wait to do it."

Georgia is given a 21.6% chance to beat Gonzaga and advance to the second round by Evan Miya, who has one of the best known college basketball analytics website.

Georgia’s top players — Demary and freshman Asa Newell — will be playing in their first NCAA Tournament, but the Bulldogs have some players who have taken part in the event.

Sophomore RJ Godfrey was a key player off the bench for Clemson’s Elite Eight team last season.

Mount Saint Mary’s transfer guard Dakota Leffew was part of a team that played in the 2021 COVID-impacted tournament that was held entirely in Indiana.

“We’ve got a tough-minded group and we’ve got a group that was incredibly resilient and connected,” White said. “We’ll gain that experience on the fly against a power program, a program we’ve got a lot of respect for, but we’ll be prepared.”

Gonzaga’s best wins were against Saint Mary’s (No. 21 in NCAA NET), Baylor (No. 30) and San Diego State (No. 52). They lost to a Kentucky team that Georgia beat.
